Our History

In 1935, Daughters of the VFW Units were formed under the leadership of National President, Winifred Toussaint.  During the following year, 78 units were established.  In 1942, the name was changed to Junior Girls and eligibility requirements were expanded.  In 1947, the Junior Girls was broadened and renamed Youth Activities when it became apparent that local auxiliaries were assisting many different youth groups.  In 1961, Junior Girls Units were separataed from Youth Activities due to increased interest.  Membership in the Units peaked in 1975 when 8,000 girls belonged to 540 Units.  Today, there are 2,188 girls in 165 Units.

Our Activities

  • Help promote the various programs of the Ladies Auxiliary.

  • They assist in blood drives.

  • Collect labels from anyCampbell’s Products.  These labels are sent to the VFW National Home for Children in Eaton Rapids, MI.  The National Home’s Charter allows them to offer services to families and children who are having serious problems and feel no other alternative than to give up the custody of their children.  These services are also extended to parent or parents on active duty.
  • Participate in contests such as Young American Creative Patriotic Art, Outstanding Young Volunteer of the Year, Patriot's Pen and Voice of Democracy.

  • Submit articles to the Auxiliary magazine Editor-In-Chief entitled Why and How I Support Our Troops.  This theme changes each year.

  • Visit VA Medical Centers, nursing homes and spend time with our Veterans and their families.

  • Promote cancer awareness and provide assistance with fundraising events.

  • Assist the Post and Auxiliary at Veterans Day in Johnston City and Marion Rose Hill Cemetery for a tribute to our deceased veterans.

  • On Veterans Day, when possible, we assist the Post and Auxiliary.

  • They visit the Marion VA the second Wednesday of each month to help serve the veterans snacks, help them watch their bingo cards and just sit and chat with them.
